We Were Liars - E. Lockhart

Time after time while thinking of picking up this book I read reviews which said nothing about the plot and got annoyed. How could I decide whether to read a book when I had little idea about its premise.

However when I finally decided to read We Were Liars, it was a great decision. I really enjoyed the character development during the novel and now understand the less you know the better. In that way you are similiar to the main character and her reflections.
Cadence Sinclair is an important as she is part of the Sinclair family of whom she paints an affluent and perfect picture of in the first chapter. Almost too perfect. The Sinclairs spend every summer on their private beehwood island, until one summer there is an accident. Everything else is explained and unravels as the story progresses.

As this is a short read (228 pages) it took me an afternoon to read and I was left emotional and wanting more. The ending was as perfect as the first chapter. I decided to wait a week before reviewing this because of the feels.

I have previously read 'The Boyfriend List' by E. Lockhart which I really enjoyed so was looking forward to reading more by this author. I really enjoyed the writing style and the way Lockhart connects with the characters, which in turn make for a more fluent read.

The characters annoyed me at some points, as expected, due to their rich and sometimes condescending attitude, usually not from Cadence though.

My only regret is that I didn't pick this up sooner.

Other books by this author:
The Boyfriend List, as part of the 'Ruby Oliver' quartet collection (2006)
The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks (2008)
