September Reads

This time of year, I like to read darker novels to go with the changing seasons. I hope to read more thrillers as I am enjoying exploring this genre. I have brought six books to university with me currently, half of which I have read in my few days here so far.
'Mr Mercedes' (Stephen King) was read in one sitting, and I look forward to reading the sequel ('Finders Keepers') soon, whereas ‘172 Hours on the Moon’ (Johan Harstad) was gripping but lacked pace for me at the beginning
I also read ‘We Never Asked for Wings’ (Vanessa Diffenbaugh; reviewed next week), which I highly enjoyed despite it being an impulse buy and a new author for me. I will be reading more from these authors in future.

Next I finished the Neapolitan novels with ‘The Story of the Lost Child' (Elena Ferrante). I am going to review the saga as a whole as reviewing one doesn’t make sense and they follow the same story and different sections of Lila and Elena’s life. In this concluding novel, the loose ends from the previous novels are tied up as well as the characters continuing through their life. They make mistakes, have husbands, lovers, families all while trying and failing repeatedly to escape their hometown and feeling drawn to each other despite often leading different lives. Well worth reading these books.

As the start of the university year loomed, I only had chance to read one more book, which was 'Ruby' (Cynthia Bond) which was an interesting novel set around racial tension in the south of America in the 1950's. This book is harrowing and contains violent pieces throughout, but I am glad I read this book due to its excellent symbolism and the way it drew attention to these underlying tensions.

Unfortunately, I didn't get around to reading 'Poison Study' (Maria V. Synder) which was also on my TBR for the month of September, so hopefully I can read this in the upcoming months.

Let me know if there are any posts that you would love to see in future or more in detail reviews. I am currently studying and so the scheduling of these posts may not be the same as they were over summer. I am doing my best! :)

If there any of these books you have read or have any recommendations from these I would love to hear them but in the meantime...

Happy Reading
x
