Making time to read is hard at times. When there is a high workload or deadlines looming reading isn’t really a priority, but here are a few tips to involve reading more in your everyday life and ultimately read more. In order to stay on top of my reading goals, I have a daily schedule including reading, e.g. to read 100 pages. This is especially great when I get home from work or in the evening as it helps me to unwind from technology and destress.
Another way to read more is through always carrying a book with you. This may be where audiobooks and e-books come in handy, especially for bulky books. It’s surprising how many hours can be built up while commuting to work, so spend it valuably. Even it is just for a few minutes, always be prepared.
Sometimes, such as during exam times, I can’t read. There is too much knowledge to learn and I find it distracting to read. Therefore, after these periods I often participate in a readathon. They are great to get out of ‘reading slumps’ by seeing how many books or/and pages you can read during the time. I enjoy the challenge of reading a lot of books within a short amount of time. There is also great support throughout online, as well as giveaways and challenges which make it an ideal way to improve reading.
Online is also a great way to find out about new books. I use youtube, other blogs and goodreads to find and research new books. I am always looking for new interesting genres and new perspective books to read.
I have recently set myself a challenge of only buying one book, for every five books that I read. This has come after I realise a complete book buying ban wouldn’t work for me and it also challenges me to read more each year. Even though I have read a lot this month, I am aware that when I go back to university I will have less time to read and therefore I will buy less books overall. At the moment my overall to be read pile is getting smaller which is great.
Do you have any tips to fit reading in to your lifestyle?
If there any other ways to find out about new books, I would interested in finding out in the comments below!
Happy reading
